selected by a jury of faculty and students to screen at the 2025 five college film festival.
“Magic Wire” was my final project for a course called “soundscapes of the connecticut river valley.” As part of the class, students choose a “soundscape” from the valley (or beyond) to explore. Students typically document their findings, a project that can be anything from a short film to a website to an oral history.
Because of my experience with both audio journalism and college radio, i was curious to explore the world of amateur radio. i reached out to various hams in and around western massachusetts, and luckily a few of them agreed to collaborate with me. in addition to covering some of the technological aspects, i also dive into the demographics of ham radio — a hobby that has had difficulty attracting women, people of color, and young people.
i had fun getting to see more of the northeast, and experimenting with visually representing sound.
